Health Benefits
Honeybees can play an important role in our health & social well-being. The substances found in beehives, including royal jelly, honey and pollen, are nutritionally and chemically complex. In people, they can enhance immunity and fight infections, and might even help some cancer patients.
Environmental Benefits
Why are beehives good for the environment? As pollinators, bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem. They support the growth of trees, flowers, and other plants, which serve as food and shelter for creatures large and small. Bees contribute to complex, interconnected ecosystems that allow a diverse number of different species to co-exist
Society Benefits
Without bees, we’d have less plants, which would negatively impact society. Plants play a crucial role in society like providing food, medicine, and even oxygen. Plants need to reproduce and rely on animals, especially bees to assist them via a process called pollination. Some plants can cross pollinate, while other rely on bees and other factors, like the wind to reproduce. During pollination, bees take pollen from the male part of the flower, the anther, to the stigma, which is the female part of the flower. This process forms nuts, fruit and seeds.
Economics & Information Drive Agriculture
What is the relationship between honeybees and the agricultural economy?
It’s their work as crop pollinators. This agricultural benefit of honey bees is estimated to be between 10 and 20 times the total value of honey and beeswax. In fact, bee pollination accounts for about $15 billion in added crop value. Honey bees are like flying dollar bills buzzing over U.S. crops.
