The Art & Science of Beekeeping Hands on Workshops offered April thru August

🐝 Attendees: Eight people per workshop maximum.

🐝 Who can learn beekeeping? Anyone!

🌼Spring Workshop Sessions:

(All workshops are weather dependent. We will notify you in advance of date changes)

Morning Sessions 10am – 12pm

  • Session One 3rd week in April – Overwintering inspection & beehive vitality inspection.
  • Session Two : 1st week in May – Queen inspection & status. Beehive vitality & pest inspection.
  • Session Three : 2nd week in May – Honeybee pests, brood health & supplemental feed.
  • Session Four :1st week in June – Queen replacement decision making, supplemental feed & pest ID.
  • Session Five : 2nd week in June – Hive vitality review, key production honey indicators.
  • Session Six : 3rd week in June -TBD in relation to bee biology, pests, pollinator plants & environmental conditions.

🐝 Adverse weather may impact the dates of workshops. If needed we will inform you of alternate dates.

🌼 Beekeeping Summer Workshops: June thru August.

🐝 Information: Each attendee shall receive appropriate fact sheets, worksheets, as well relevant & timely practices & procedures of honeybee biology & health.

🌼 Session Goals: Provide each attendee a higher level of confidence in caring for their honeybees through a more in depth look at bee biology. As well grasping practical adaptive practices in light of unexpected climate change impacts. Including disruption of historical pollinator plant flowering periods, pollutants, existing & emerging pests, as well as weather extreme flip-flops.

🐝 Philosophy: Enquiry of the direct and ubiquitous impacts of climate change upon honeybee biology, health, vigor & vitality.

🌼 Context: Chronic & acute climate change impacts exerted upon honeybees are consequential, & growing in frequency, & duration.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR:

Gerald Posner has cared for soil, trees, herbaceous plants & bees as a professional for over 35 years. He was educated at Cobleskill College (AAS), Cornell University (B.S.) and Columbia University (Master in Sustainability Science Management). Throughout his career he has worked with local associations, government agencies, corporate parks, non for profits, botanic gardens, several parks. Including Brooklyn, NY Prospect Park. Manhattan, NY Central Park, Tompkins Square Park, Bryant Park as well as school districts, NYC Department of Transportation, civic associations and private estates. Today, his focus is on the care of bees in Vermont and like most beekeepers he’s honing his bee care skill sets in the current Anthropocene era. Gerald is looking forward to greeting each new beekeeper & learning from your experiences as well.
