More about us: Geralds passion for plant life began while living in Atlantic Beach LI NY during his youth. He & his friend Paul started a small plant care business taking care of lawns and gardens for homes in their neighborhood. Paul went on to become a dentist, but Geralds passion for plants only grew (pun intended) Gerald started his own plant health & tree care business in Brooklyn NY named The Arbor Barber. Although his career began in NY he spent a great deal of time in the beautiful Green Mountain state throughout his life exploring, hiking, camping, fishing.
He attended Cornell University ( Ithaca NY) earning a B.S. in Agriculture. While there he had his own strawberry farm & on campus farmstand where he did test trials that involved yield totals along with taste & firmness tests to determine which strawberry varieties were best suited for fresh or frozen markets. In conjunction with Dr. Gene Galetta at the USDA research center in Beltsville MD. Gerald was involved in growing TriStar & Tribute varieties of strawberries. After Cornell he then went on to earn a M.S. from Columbia University (New York City) in Earth Science/Sustainability Management. His expertise & knowledge is vast with many years of experience in arboriculture , plant health care, gardening, landscaping, pesticide management, farming & beekeeping. The New York Times has published articles he has written on plant & tree care. Many historical landmark parks and trees including Central Park & Prospect Park have been cared for by Gerald.
While Gerald was in school, strawberry farming in Ithaca NY, studying trees & hiking the trails of The Adirondacks of New York & The Green Mountains of Vermont Karen enjoyed gardening at home while earning a degree from Triton College (River Grove IL) in Business & Marketing with a minor in Exercise Science along with studies in Art, Design & Photography from The School of The Art Institute Chicago IL. On her off time from studies she was a member of a travel dance company that did performances around the country including NYC, Boston & Burlington VT. With Burlington being one of her favorite places. She was awarded a fine arts scholarship at The Gus Giordano Dance Center Evanston IL. where she studied dance for 4 years. Later Karen expanded upon those studies to become a certified exercise instructor, as well as a substitute early childhood education teacher & a physical therapy assistant. She actively worked in those fields for many years until one day when their two paths crossed in Chicago IL. A short time later Karen began working & learning alongside Gerald during the summer months in the plant health care field along the east coast.
Over the years we would visit Burlington Vermont often especially when our son attended UVM & then we became a full time residents along with our daughter who moved several years later to Vermont too. It was during that time that our love for Vermont grew even more. For the last 10 plus years we have been focused on working together in the plant health care, beekeeping, honey, small produce & vertical farming field. Our most recent project is having our own honeybee farm in Hinesburg VT. We are thrilled to be working close to our home in South Burlington, providing delicious, nutritious foods to the local community & giving back to the state that has given us so much! We believe our backgrounds in art & science is what makes us a good team along with our passion for nature & a healthy thriving environment. This is a big part of why we are deeply committed to utilizing sustainable organic methods in all of our services while dedicated to providing exceptional products & services.
